About Laguna Beach

Laguna Beach is a city located in southern Orange County, California, approximately 24 miles southeast of downtown Santa Ana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 23,727. The Current OMB metropolitan designation for Laguna Beach and the Orange County Area is "Santa Ana-Anaheim-Irvine, CA." The city of Laguna Beach is the setting of MTV's Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County reality show. Though the show puts Laguna Beach on the map many of the city's people feel the show misrepresents their community, and contributes to the sterotype of Laguna being rich, white, and "stuck-up".The city's most famous institution is the Festival of the Arts, an annual art exhibition in the summer which has given the city a reputation for being "artsy." Apart from bringing together artists and art collectors, the Festival is also famous for the Pageant of the Masters, an annual living statue show where local volunteers reproduce several dozen famous artworks in an evening (with the help of elaborate costumes and makeup). The Pageant is apparently the only show of its type and scale in western North America.Today, Laguna Beach has become a full-fledged resort town. Its newest addition is the Montage Resort & Spa, which draws its own Hollywood crowd, including sometime-resident Heather Locklear and hubby Richie Sambora. Locals and visitors alike can stroll in the new public park that was created along with the Montage, explore tidepools and enjoy the sunsets over the Pacific-just as the Indians, Spaniards and early artists who recognized Laguna's charm did in times gone by. Laguna's universal allure is best expressed on a famous gate built in 1935 that today stands at the corner of Forest and Park avenues. It reads, "This gate hangs well and hinders none, refresh and rest, then travel on."
